Pureora Forest Park Luxury Camp - WMB Group

Date: 26-11-2017  to  29-11-2017

Whanganui Museum Botanical Group excursion to:

Pureora Forest Park Luxury Camp November 2017

Pureora is known for kokako, native tree logging and protests in the 1970s and, more recently, the cycle trail known as the Timber Trail. Kokako numbers have increased to 465 pairs (in 2016) from a low of 20 pairs and 114 singles in 1993.

We will stay at the new Timber Trail Lodge, arriving Sunday 26 November and departing on Wednesday 29 November. The lodge has 25 beds; some are bunks. We need a minimum of 20 participants to make this work.

The trip covers three nights' accommodation, all meals supplied, linen on the beds and shared ablutions. Cost is $185.00 each.

Transport within Pureora Forest Park is available at $25 each per day. This is advisable as the roads within the Park have lots of potholes.

Draft programme
Sunday 26 Nov: Arrive soon after lunch. Botanise around the lodge from 2 to 5 pm.
Monday 27: Rise very early to hear the kokako dawn chorus and then botanise in the northern area of PFP, taking in the forest tower that was built near trees the protesters sat in day after day to protect the forest.
Tuesday 28: Botanise at the southern end of the Timber Trail. DoC speaker in the evening.
Wednesday 29: Depart lodge by 9 am, botanising on the way home.
