For just one week, from Monday 3 September, the Museum exhibition space is filled with hundreds of handmade waka constructed by around 700 children and whanau groups from ten Whanganui schools and education groups. Created as part of community-learning project in partnership with Whanganui Learning Centre, participants focused on their own family stories of migration. Their resulting artworks include a huge variety of vessels and other constructions expressing identity and family history.

The community response to the project has been so great that all the waka couldn’t fit into our temporary premises at 62 Ridgway Street. With the support of the Whanganui District Council, hundreds more artworks have been included in a second display in the old Londontown/Farmers a few minutes along Victoria Avenue.

We invite you to visit with your education group or whanau, admire all the creative constructions, then stay to design and make your own personal waka to add to the displays.
