The Whanganui Science Forum presents 'Science and Policy - How to get the best out of your experts'.
Dr Verna Smith lectures in Public Policy and has also worked for several government agencies, developing policy for housing, social and family services and treatment and rehabilitation services for people with disabilities.
Building academic and public service partnerships to support evidence-based policymaking is a special interest. Her PhD focused on a comparative study of pay-for-performance policymaking in primary health care.
How important is science in policymaking in New Zealand?
What are the barriers and facilitators to our greater utilisation of scientific knowledge in policymaking?
What can we learn from other jurisdictions?
What should we be doing about this?
